CRITERION CORNER GIVEAWAY!!!!
hey there. it’s been a while since i’ve randomly given stuff away, and that doesn’t jive well with my philosophy that love and / or readership should be shamelessly bought. so in honor of the holiday season - and to make up for lost time / clear my shelf of some extra stuff i’ve got lying around - i thought i’d throw the biggest Criterion Corner giveaway yet.
The Prize:
- DVD of Sidney Lumet’s 12 ANGRY MEN!
- Blu-ray of Claude Chabrol’s LES COUSINS!
- 1 DVD box set of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s THREE COLORS! (opened but never watched and in mint condition… long story)
- 1 MYSTERY DVD!!!! (maybe a Criterion film, maybe just something I want to share with a stranger. definitely previously loved).
TO ENTER: just “like” and / or Re-blog this post. each note will count as a separate entry, so every fellow blogger can therefore submit a maximum total of 2 entries.
giveaway will be closed at 12 P.M. EST on Friday, 12/3/2011. 1 winner will be randomly selected from the notes. so the odds should be okay if not super awesome, but someone’s gonna get some great stuff for nothing.
good luck, and thanks so, so much for reading the blog and my Criterion Corner column on movies.com!
Good luck everyone. I sure none of us would mind a little time-out in the Criterion Corner during the holidays :)
Tonight, the last of my companions has fallen asleep. I am alone to watch guard. Will I stand in honor of victory or defeat? For me to lose my waking awareness would be detrimental. A strike or siege comes best at a time the defenders least expect.
“A dagger in the dark is worth a thousand swords at dawn.”
I remember this in the veil of shadows, leaning stealthy against wall and unseen pattern. The rustle of leaves will not distract my zeal and finesse. Soon will come moments of utmost mortal importance.
Oh Alfred.
Give them pleasure - the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare.
I am a typed director. If I made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach.
I have a perfect cure for a sore throat: cut it.
Revenge is sweet and not fattening.
Television has brought back murder into the home - where it belongs.
When an actor comes to me and wants to discuss his character, I say, ‘It’s in the script.’ If he says, ‘But what’s my motivation?, ’ I say, ‘Your salary.’
Someone once told me that every minute a murder occurs, so I don’t want to waste your time, I know you want to go back to work.
Awesome quotes, awesome picture, AWESOME director.

SONG OF THE DAY #8
JONNY GREENWOOD: PROSPECTORS ARRIVE
I missed a SONG OF THE DAY, so I’m posting two today. The second is Prospectors Arrive, from the soundtrack to a favorite film of mine There Will Be Blood. Interestingly enough, the composer is Radiohead’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood- but you’d never know it.
Simply put, this song is being alone, isolated, drifting into recesses. Experience it.
SONG OF THE DAY #7
RODRIGO Y GABRIELA: DIABLO ROJO
Enter Rodrigo Y Gabriela, the ‘Y’ being Spanish for ‘and,’ separating the names of the very unseparate real-life couple. Rodrigo plays lead guitar while Gabriela plays rhythm- or so it usually goes. The only sound you’ll hear in their music is whatever the two make with their guitars, and nothing else. Its Latin, acoustic, flamenco, and rock/metal wafting the flames of unplugged wildfire. The sound is full and tasteful, without the need of additional instruments.
And this song demonstrates their picking prowess so well, you’ll wish you were as good as them.
The artist is Mark Powell.

I wish I knew who the artist was. Anyone have any ideas?
I have no idea who the artist is, unfortunately. I wonder how the ‘skin’ texture of the creatures was created…
How do you win a tug-of-war between apathy and foolish hope?
BIGELF: MONEY
This time, its a music video. I decided to click one of those ads on the Facebook advertisement bar- y’know the ones you never wanna click. And I got this music video: Money, by Bigelf. Once again, lyrics are a really strong point here. The band’s been described as sort of a more accessible Black Sabbath meets The Beatles meets Pink Floyd. Which aren’t really inaccessible to begin with.
I know that I’ve claimed this sort of thing a lot but I gotta…this is one of the best music videos I’ve ever seen. Story, visuals, audio (especially), concept, its very professional. Addicting stuff.
